Driving in Atlantic City may seem a bit intimidating especially if you are not familiar with city traffic. Over the past few years I have learned some great tricks that I would love to share with you in order to make your travel time more efficient.

First I want to talk about what seems like never ending lights on every street corner. It is virtually impossible to sail through the streets on Atlantic and Pacific Avenues because you are almost guaranteed to be stopped at a red light every other street.  This is why it is important to familiarize yourself with the order of the streets beforehand and memorize which ones lead to your favorite casinos.

The four main streets are as follows: Pacific, Atlantic, Artic and Baltic. Pacific and Atlantic are two way streets and Arctic and Baltic are one way streets. Someone once told me, if you travel on Artic or Baltic and get one green light you will hit all green lights. It has worked for me every time! This information is fantastic, I figure out which casino I’m going to and it smooth sailing. Try it out!

Second, I love to tell people that I am a city driver. Now don’t get me wrong, I am no pro at driving in major cities such as NYC, but it just sounds cool that I am a pro at Atlantic City traffic.

Always remember that Jitneys make frequent stops and they are always in the right lane. These Jitneys are a 24 hour constant along Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. While keeping this in mind, also remember that there aren’t many streets with designated left turn lanes so when cars need to turn left it stops the traffic behind them and forces the other cars to go around in the right lane.

My solution, always keep an eye out a block ahead of you. If you see a Jitney get over to the left to pass, however if you see someone with a left turn signal and they are stuck at the light chances are they will be stuck there longer than it would take for you to wait for the Jitney stop. It is ok to weave in and out as long as you are a safe driver and are aware of your surroundings.

My third and final tip is to make sure you collect a receipt from the parking garage when you leave. These receipts are valid to use in any other casino for that same day to alleviate having to pay for parking again.

To add to that, you should know that some of the higher end restaurants in the casinos will have a special parking voucher for the weekends so you can benefit from not having to pay the higher parking rates.
